What are the types of shipping containers?

There are several variations of the shipping container available, each is designed to suit a particular type of cargo. They include:

Dangerous Goods Containers

Dangerous goods can be defined as time and temperature sensitive products and can include food, medicine and other perishable items. Tiger Containers specialises in the storage of petro-chemical storage and paint thinners. We understand the importance in maintaining the quality and integrity of your products and will modify shipping containers to meet your exact requirements.

Flat Rack Containers

These are flat racks with collapsible walls used for transporting out-of-gauge cargo.

General purpose container

This is the most common type of cargo container in the world. It’s used for transporting and storing dry cargo. A slightly taller variation of this is called a high-cube.

High cubes containers

High cube containers share most of their attributes with the regular general purpose shipping container i.e. width and lengths. The only aspect where they differ is the height.

Offices/sites Containers

For people looking for temporary office space and don’t desire to construct permanent premises for use on job sites, shipping containers also provide the perfect solution. Containers provide an affordable and convenient office space solution for construction sites, mining operations, and other temporary worksites.

Open-top containers

These resemble the general purpose container but have removable canvas tops or side walls. They are used for transporting oversized goods and goods that require ventilation respectively.

Refrigeration Containers

Refrigerated containers are primarily used for transporting goods that need to be kept cold at all times, but that's not their only use. Refrigerated containers can also be used as a cool room or a freezer at big functions, temporary locations and events.

Side opening containers

These share the same features with regular containers with the only difference being that they open on the side too. The side doors can cover the entire length of the shipping container or a smaller part depending on the intended use.

Temperature Controlled Containers

These are either refrigerated, insulated or heated and are used to transport perishable goods. The reefer container is arguably the greatest modification of a shipping container to date

What are the shipping container sizes (dimensions)?

Internationally, two common sea container sizes are popular: the 20ft container and the 40ft container. Tiger Containers stocks these sizes and can also provide custom-sized containers ranging anywhere between 5ft and 40ft.
