Published on Yahoo News this week [https://za.news.yahoo.com/happens-shipping-containers-lost-sea-122500812.html] is an interesting and surprising article on what happens to shipping containers that are lost at sea. Shipping vessels often face heavy winds and storms, with violent swells and rolling waves that can cause the shipping containers they carry to come loose and fall overboard.

This happened just recently in the Monterrey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, with 15 containers falling to the icy ocean floor. The pollution that this causes to the ocean can be significant, with the extent of the damage depending on what the containers were holding.

With a remote controlled vessel, researchers found that the container was barely corroded, and many worms and snails treated it as an artificial reef by attaching themselves to it. Most alarming however, was that the container was altering sea floor currents and attracting predators, which could affect the entire food chain, and animals in the area. Researchers say they want to continue evaluating the effects of lost shipping containers and understand the impact that they can have as a whole.
